Life Story Interview
Courses Involved:
HD FS 445
Faculty Involved: Daniel Lago, Ph.D.
Elizabeth Seymour, Ph.D.
Twenty-five students worked with Dan Lago and Elizabeth Seymour on cultural perspective and interview skills. The students then conducted interviews with seniors from Green Avenue and Eleventh Street Towers focusing on personal history, transition to public housing, current social support, and current needs. Students met with interested volunteer residents and completed brief narrative life story interviews in the senior towers. Interviews were casual and informal, and based on several meetings. The students served essentially as transcribers. The residents retained the right to privacy and had complete control over any public use of the story. This benefited both the students as well as the seniors. They were able to establish a relationship with the student, and use their story for personal reflection or other purposes in which they wished. As a result of this class Dr. Lago and Dr. Seymour have began an autobiography-writing group among tower residents.
