PAWS: Success Stories

At the end of Summer 2008 we have 13 individuals enrolled in a post-secondary institute. All of the 13 enrolled participants have completed at least 1 full semester and have maintained GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

P.A.W.S.’ (Perseverance, Ambition and the Will for Success) very first participant Deanna Wyandt, who currently attends Penn State Altoona, feels that the program has given her the opportunity to change the quality of her daughter’s life as well as her own. Deanna felt that her chance at pursuing a post-secondary education had passed, but P.A.W.S helped her go back. When asked what advice she would give to an individual that was trying to pursue a post-secondary education she states, “It is absolutely worth it, all you need is the ambition and motivation. P.A.W.S. will help you with the rest.”

Mother and son combination, Dorothy and Christopher Miller, have both enrolled into Penn State Altoona. Dorothy first began attending P.A.W.S. meetings to help her son go to college, so that he would have a better future. She began to think about her own future and how much she always wanted to pursue a post-secondary education; she feels that the P.A.W.S. program gave her the chance to make a difference in her life. Dorothy stated, “Don’t give up; you hold the keys to your future. Just keep working hard until you get where you want to go…it will be worth it in the end.”

Christopher always wanted to continue his education, but felt he was not able to. He feels that the P.A.W.S. program was also able to help him with all of his questions and concerns. Christopher stated, “P.A.W.S. has shown me that college is within reach of ALL people.”
