Sara Ciaverella, Summer 2006

My internship was a great experience that gave me exposure to many skills that will definitely benefit me in the future. Not only did I gain experience working with children and adolescents, but I also had the privilege of planning and implementing a program from the beginning to end. We used the framework that is used by the Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission, but we tried to put an educational value on the program. One of our goals was to teach both the children and adolescents leadership skills and the importance of teamwork. Basically, Mike and I used the CBRC's design, took suggestions from our professors and used our own ideas to put together a five-week program for the residents at Fairview Hills. This internship also gave me experience contacting different individuals and organizations to participate in our program. We had approximately thirty individuals and organizations who donated their time and resources to help make our program the success that it was. Through this internship, I learned that there are plenty of people out there who are more than willing to help a good cause. We had a lot of very nice activities planned for the participants of this program and the contacts that we used throughout with program will be of use in the future. I had the opportunity to work with a lot of wonderful people throughout the course of my internship and I am especially thankful for the professors and other faculty members that helped us and supported us throughout the whole thing. This internship would not have been possible without the help of everyone involved. The whole thing was definitely a rewarding experience and the skills I gained will stay with me throughout my life.
