Social Mentoring Activities
Courses Involved:
HD FS 496
Faculty Involved: Lauren Jacobson, Ph.D.
Students collaborated with the instructor to design two evenings and one afternoon of social/mentoring activities. The primary purpose of these activities were to provide the youth at Fairview Hills with opportunities to socialize with one another and with college-aged counterparts without having to worry about transportation and lack of finances. Three different programs were organized.
- “Winter is Ja’Makin Me Crazy”
- A Pool and Pizza Party
- Afternoon at the Park
Each program attracted a mix of different aged adolescents, both boys and girls, and minority and non-minority youth. At least one parent/volunteer helped out with each event. The project helped students understand the purpose of the activities in which they developed during the semester and the potential impact of such work on the long-term experiences of low-income youth.
