Nursing students planned, publicized, and implemented programs that included blood pressure and weight screenings with the residents at the Eleventh Street and Green Avenue Towers. A total of 61 residents attended the screenings with average attendance of 14 per session. Students enrolled in NURS 200 critiqued research articles regarding weight management for young and middle- aged adults in preparation for program development for this population. Educational programs focusing on diabetes care were also developed by three students to implement during the weight and B/P screenings. Diabetes was selected as the focus because approximately 80% of residents who attend B/P screenings have a diagnosis of diabetes and survey results indicated this was a need for residents attending the program. The surveys of educational need were administered during the screening sessions as well. Students presented individual instruction regarding portion control to residents during the screenings too. Nursing students continued to produce a monthly calendar that provides quick access to all health promotion activities in the towers.
