The Pennsylvania State University, the Altoona College invites applications for the faculty positions listed below. All positions are tenure-track unless otherwise indicated. Located in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania, Penn State Altoona is a largely residential campus of 4000 students offering 19 baccalaureate degree programs and the first two years of 180 Penn State baccalaureate degrees. Degree offerings at Penn State Altoona will continue to expand. Only 40 miles from the University Park campus, Altoona College offers the advantages of small college teaching with the readily available resources of a major research university.

ACCOUNTING: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Accounting. An earned doctorate degree in Accounting from an AACSB accredited institution is required, but ABD candidates near completion may be considered. CPA or related professional certification is a plus. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching and research interests in Auditing and in Accounting Information Systems. In addition to demonstrating dedication to teaching, the successful candidate in the tenure-track position is also expected to conduct research leading to publications in refereed journals, advise students, provide college service, and engage in continuing professional development. COMMUNICATIONS: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Communications. The position requires a Ph.D. in Communications or related field. The candidate should possess expertise in two or more of the following areas: advertising, journalism, new media, public relations, and video production. Candidates should be able to teach introductory and upper-level courses, maintain a strong role in program development, and assist in the transition to a new state-of-art broadcast production facility. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & FAMILY STUDIES: The College invites applications for a joint tenure-track position in Early Childhood Education and Human Development and Family Studies. The ideal candidate will have actual experience working in early childhood settings, as well as teaching experience at the college level. The candidate must demonstrate the potential for scholarly research and should expect to teach introductory and upper-division courses in child development and early childhood education. The position requires a Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field. ECONOMICS: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Economics. Highly qualified candidates in all fields of economics will be considered, but applicants specializing in International Trade/International Finance will be given stronger consideration. Candidates should have exceptional teaching skills and a strong commitment to research. The position requires a Ph.D. in Economics or related field. Review of applications will begin December 15, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled. Initial interviews will be conducted at the ASSA meetings in San Francisco, CA January 3-5, 2009, but all applicants will be considered.

GEOSCIENCES: The College invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Geosciences. Preference will be given to applicants in hydrology, groundwater, or related environmental areas (such as climatology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, environmental geophysics). Candidates should also demonstrate familiarity with geo-visualization and remote sensing techniques. Teaching responsibilities include introductory courses in earth sciences and upper-level courses in areas of expertise. The successful candidate should be dedicated to undergraduate teaching and research (particularly on practical geo-environmental process problems/issues) and be committed to supporting our undergraduate B.A. program in Environmental Studies. The position requires a Ph.D. in one of the Geosciences or related field. Review of applications will begin the week of November 3, 2008 and continue until the position is filled.

HISTORY: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in History with focus on continental Europe. Specific research specialization open. Teaching responsibilities at both lower- and upper-division levels center on continental Europe in the period 1800-1914 and areas related to research, if different, and will include Western Civilization survey I and II. Demonstrated ability to teach African, South Asian, or Latin American history at survey level is desirable. Responsibilities include development of appropriate new courses at the lower- and upper-division levels, participating in further expansion of our B.A. in History, and conducting academic advising. The position requires a Ph.D. in History or related field. Review of applications will begin the week of October 15, 2008, and continue until the positions are filled. Initial interviews will be conducted at the AHA meeting, January 2009, but all applications will be considered.

KINESIOLOGY: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Kinesiology. Candidates should be able to teach a variety of professional activities in the general education program to include individual, dual, and team sports and games, along with innovative activities that meet contemporary fitness needs and interests of students. Expertise for teaching introductory courses in the Kinesiology major is also desirable, with additional teaching assignments to be made at the discretion of the Division Head. Research specialization is open. The position requires a Ph.D. in Kinesiology or closely related field. MATHEMATICS: The College invites applications for a multi-year, non-tenure track appointment in Mathematics in the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences beginning in Fall 2009. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of introductory level courses including pre-Calculus and Calculus for technology students. Duties will consist of 12 credits in lecture courses together with college service, including advising. Candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The minimum requirement for this position is a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field and teaching experience at the college level. This position is a multi-year (3-year), fixed term appointment at the level of assistant professor and is renewable based upon performance and need. MICROBIOLOGY AND MOLECULAR GENETICS: The College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline, a strong interest in undergraduate instruction, and a demonstrated ability to develop an effective research program. Teaching responsibilities include lower- and upper-level courses in microbiology, cell biology, and genetics, introductory biology, and an upper-level course in the candidate’s specific area(s) of interest. RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION: The College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment for a Rhetoric and Composition specialist in the Division of Arts and Humanities. The position requires a Ph.D. in English or a related field. The candidate must be able to teach both introductory and advanced writing courses. The ability to teach professional writing, advanced business writing, or other writing courses contributing to our B.A. in English is highly desirable. Initial interviews will be conducted at the annual Modern Language Association meeting in December 2008, but all applicants will be considered.

VISUAL ARTS: The College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Visual Arts in the Division of Arts and Humanities. Specialization is open and the candidate must be able to teach a range of subjects at various levels within the context of a generalized art making program. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong exhibition records and/or teaching experience that reflect expertise in at least one discipline but interdisciplinary investigations are highly desirable. This position will serve the Visual Art Studies degree program, assist in the development of its recently acquired studio facility, and teach general education courses in Art. Applications should include a portfolio of research and/or creative interests and accomplishments (slides, CDs/DVDs with clear instructions on format/access, web site URLs, press), and an SASE. The position requires an M.F.A., and review of applications will begin the week of January 15, 2009. Initial interviews will be conducted at the annual College Art Association meeting in February 2009, but all applications will be considered.

The positions require a doctorate degree in an appropriate field, and are tenure-track appointments at the level of assistant professor or a rank commensurate with qualifications beginning in Fall 2009, unless otherwise noted. Applicants should present a record of evidence and potential effectiveness in teaching, research/creative accomplishment, and service. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, research/creative accomplishment, student recruitment and retention, and curricular development and assessment.
