Program Evolution

As of fall semester 2007, students can apply for admission directly into the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology program as incoming freshmen. Providing the student meets the acceptance criteria, he/she will be accepted directly into a baccalaureate program in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology. The criteria for acceptance into the major will be identical to the criteria for acceptance into the College of Engineering. The minimum number of secondary school units required for admission consideration to the College of Engineering is four units of English, five units of Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences/Foreign Languages, three units of science (preparation in Chemistry and Physics is advised), and three units of math including 1½ units of algebra, 1 unit of plane geometry, and ½ unit of trigonometry. Two units of the same foreign language are recommended, rather than required. The University accepts the definition of a secondary school unit as established by the Carnegie Foundation. A unit represents one year of work in a subject in a preparatory school or secondary school, provided that the work done in that subject is approximately one-fourth of the total amount of work regularly required in a year in the school.

The option of completing the two-year associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology will still be available; however, it will no longer be necessary to complete the associate degree program in order to gain admission into the baccalaureate degree program.

Transfers into the program with advanced standing will still be permissible. If a student wishes to transfer into the program, he/she will have to satisfy the requirements for transfer into the major, which are currently being developed. Generally, transfers can occur at any time and will be handled in the same manner as transfers into any other four-year degree. Transcript evaluations will be used to determine the transferability of courses, and department evaluations will determine the substitutability of transfer courses for required courses in the curriculum.

Application for Re-enrollment into BSEMET

Capstone Design Course – EMET 440
Design based activities are incorporated into each of the courses in the curriculum. Students make use of the technical information presented in course material to develop design based work. The BSEMET program culminates in a capstone design project course required for all students. The course focuses on planning, development, and implementation of an electromechanical design project chosen by the students and approved by the course instructor in consultation with a faculty panel in the semester preceding course registrations. In addition to the design, management, and fabrication of an advanced product or process, EMET 440 requires formal report writing, project documentation, group presentations, and project demonstrations. The goal of this course is to demonstrate the ability to manage a major project as a member of a product or process development team. The project must involve the design and implementation of products or processes that integrate electrical, mechanical, and computer control elements. In this project-based course, students are expected to effectively manage their time and team efforts to produce a finished product or process in the fifteen-week semester.
