Gary Chulick, visiting assistant professor physics,
received his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics
and applied astrophysics from Case Western
Reserve University. Rather than nuclear theory, his
research interests over the last twenty years have
been in geophysics, focused on understanding the
structure of the earth’s crust and mantle in relation
to seismic activity; he maintains a close collaboration
with the U.S. Geological Survey. During the
same period, he has taught a wide variety of physics
courses at several undergraduate institutions.

Phillip Day’s research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying hormonal signal transduction in germinating cereal grains such as rice, barley, and wheat. Specifically, Dr. Day studies the role of lipid- and protein-kinases in the gibberellin response of rice aleurone cells. He currently teaches courses in microbiology and genetics.

at McMaster University. She is currently
completing a graduate certificate in GIS at Northern
Illinois University. Her research interests include
hydrology and groundwater resources. Her current

for the integration of spatial data on soil and vegetation
dynamics with hydrochemical data.

applied mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute. In her dissertation, entitled “Facilitating
Case Reuse During Problem Solving in Algebra-
Based Physics,” she investigates methods for facilitating
case reuse in problem solving. Her research
includes semi-structured individual and focus group
interviews as well as student work on exam problems.
