Work Study in the Science Labs
 |
If you have been awarded a
work study grant and are looking for an opportunity to get practical experience in an environment that has more to offer than
the traditional classroom setting, the Science Labs are for you. Opportunities
for cross training exist in the areas of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Geo
Sciences. Not only will this job give you a chance to make new friends, but it
will also give you the opportunity to learn things that you would not encounter
in the classroom setting. You may even find an aspect of science that is so
interesting to you that you may want to pursue a minor, take part in an
independent research project, or become involved in a faculty member's research
laboratory.
|
- Who works in our Science Labs?
- We typically have students with
a diverse educational background. Yes some students are majoring in the
sciences, but you do not have to be a science major to work for us. We
are looking for students who want an opportunity to learn more than they could
in a traditional classroom setting.
- What kinds of jobs will I be doing?
- Students work on any number of small tasks
which usually involve preparation, setup, and clean up of materials for labs.
Students also maintain the appearance of the labs and stockroom areas. A clean
and orderly environment gives others confidence that students learn and work in
a safe lab environment.
- How many hours will I work?
- Students typically sign on for a 10-12 hour
work week and are expected to show up on time when scheduled. Study time is
available when tasks are complete, but this fluctuates depending on what is
needed for a particular day or week.
- How do I apply for Federal Work Study?
- Students apply for financial aid through the FAFSA form, on this form student must select that they would like to receive Work study. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step in the financial aid process. You use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as grants, loans, and work-study. For more information, visit Penn State Altoona's Student Aid Office.
