As some of you know, I am a political science major and studying abroad in Vienna, Austria this semester. Because I have discussed politics with many of my peers, I am aware that many are either uninterested or apathetic to what occurs in the political world. Therefore, I will keep this brief.
While studying abroad this semester, I have been exposed to a new realm of the political world. In America, I have defended myself as a conservative. In Austria, I defend myself as an American. In conversations with professors, I am bombarded with questions that I have never been asked before. America is questioned. Why not Marxism/socialism? Why does America feel the need to be so militaristic? Why not take neutrality as Austria does? What a cultural and politically eye-opening experience. These questions, though alarming when first heard, are simple to answer. In the end of every conversation, it boils down to the fact that Austria and America share different political beliefs because of the history of each country and government. This exposure of Austria's belief system calls for slow growth and understanding which can be difficult when raised in such a different background. I am neither ashamed nor sheepish of my homeland. In fact, I am proud of my country and will defend it, if necessary, everyday when I walk the beautiful streets of Vienna. Hi Anna - I am glad that you are able to have such interesting conversations. In addition, you are getting others to think differently about our system and their own. Keep having those conversations!! Tuesday, October 13, 2009 @ 9:11 pm
I am proud of my country, yet fear my government. Working men of ALL countries, unite! Thank you Karl Marx. Wednesday, October 21, 2009 @ 9:21 pm
Anna, Read your post, and am encouraged that there are proud, young, conservative Americans out there! I am the Events chair of the Blair County Tea Party, and although I am aware you are out of the country, I'd like to ask you to look us up upon your return ... and/or share our information with your like-minded college friends. Our website is www.blaircountyteaparty.org, and we are a non-partisan organization concerned with big government, excessive spending and taxation, and the blatant disregard of the Constitution. We would love to have more young people join our organization. If you or anyone else has any questions, they can also contact me at my email. Thanks for your time, and enjoy your time in Vienna! I'm jealous. |
