Subject: Obsessive, Compulsive, Personality Disorder. Oh my!
Turning off the lights at one switch instead of another… Setting out most of my clothes the night before, for the next day… Setting my place at the table the evening before, for the next morning… Leaving home about an hour before class just to be sure to make it there with extra time to spare, when I only have to drive about 25 minutes… Being fussy if I'm asked a half hour before, to hang out, when I'm probably not doing much at that moment anyway. My early morning routine consists of making my bed, getting dressed (minus the shoes), getting the cereal out, pouring my glass of orange juice, shaving, spritzing on some cologne, blowing my nose, cleaning my glasses, moussing my hair (if it is long enough), eating my breakfast, tying my shoes before I get up from my chair, remote starting my car (if it's during the winter time), brushing my teeth, grabbing my books and then heading out to the car. I choose to eat breakfast first in my morning routine if I wake up tired, or I would otherwise get dressed and make my bed first. And if that isn't enough, here is what I do before I shower (sometimes up to a couple hours beforehand if nobody is using the bathroom): I set out the deodorant can and one Q-tip on the countertop, open the shower curtain halfway, open the caps on the body wash and shampoo bottles, I put the lather-builder on the floor of the shower near the drain, turn the plastic cup upside down so it doesn't get soapy water in it, I put my wash cloth on the towel bar in the shower, I move the two throw rugs to a specific placement in front of the shower, and lastly I lay my towel in front of the shower so I don't slip on the linoleum flooring.
Organized to the point of insanity? Yep, sounds like I have a severe case of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder and many of you probably have it too. Pain in the butt isn't it? I mean what is worse than knowing you have a funky bad habit when you are too entrenched in that habit to do much about it? Or try taking OCPD and combining it with a few perfectionist tendencies, such as straightening a hanging picture because it would drive you crazy if you left it crooked, and you would have one… unique individual. Thankfully few lose sleep over it because it is only habitual; otherwise a ton of people would probably be seeing counselors on a daily basis and would be paying medical bills left and right. So, I thought I would poke and prod at this quirkiest of personality traits to see if I could encourage some of you to share your off-the-wall habits. Sure I may have shared what others might deem a private shower routine, but keep it decent, respectable, and don't be afraid to share the funniest habits you have. Just consider this your OCPD Anonymous and have some fun. Happy Thanksgiving to you all, see some of you in a week.
