Fall 2006
During September, I continued to visit schools. I don’t know about anyone else but when I walk onto a campus I know immediately if I like it or not. It’s not a feeling I can explain but that is how I narrowed down my choices. I scheduled a date to take my GRE, which cost $130.00. You can schedule online at ets.org or by phone. I then rescheduled my exam because I wasn’t ready and that cost me another $40.00. Before scheduling the test make sure that the schools you are applying to require the test. Also, there are two GRE tests, the general test and the subject test, so make sure you know which ones the schools require. At this point, I was starting to worry about how I was going to pay for another two years of school. I found out about these great things called assistantships. You work at the school and they pay for your tuition and you get a stipend during the semester. The assistantship can be full-time or part-time. This is something to research when you are choosing schools. You can apply for the assistantships when you apply for the school.
October and November have been filled with applications, recommendations, transcripts and essays. Each school requires different things. To help keep organized, I made an Excel worksheet with the names of the schools and each item that the school required for admission. As I get things done, I check it off.
The graduate school process can get expensive. Most applications are at least $30.00 and transcripts from the registrar’s office are $6.00 each. One day when I was paying for an application, I thought about that credit card commercial. GRE Test- $170.00, Application Fees- $100.00, Transcript Fees- $18.00 Finally getting a job- Priceless. To get transcripts from the registrar’s office, you have to go to http://www.registrar.psu.edu/. As of right now, I am done with all my applications but in the process of writing essays and goal statements. The Career Services has lots of books to help write essays and goal statements for schools.
