Summer 2006
I knew coming into college that I wanted to attend graduate school. I thought about getting my doctorate but that is way too many years of school for me. So I decided to get my masters. The next question was for what. I started to do research in the career library in the Career Services Office and online. I talked to Erin Jennings, a career counselor about her experiences with graduate school and some ideas to focus my search. After researching many graduate programs that I could get with my bachelors in psychology, I decided on counseling. After I decided this, I went back online to find schools that offered counseling. To help organize my search, I started what I call “My Grad School Binder.” I organized all the information that I received from the schools in a binder. If you go to the school’s website, almost every school has a link to get information sent to you. After you find some schools the process is much like it was looking for an undergraduate school. You need to determine where you want to live, how much money you want to spend and so on. Also depending on what you are going for, there may be certain accreditations for your program. For example, in counseling there is the CACREP accreditation. If the school is CACREP accredited, it helps you to become a licensed counselor after graduating from your Master’s program. Keep your GPA up and look at the course requirements for schools. Some schools require a higher GPA than others and a certain number of credits in some courses. For example, a 3.5 GPA and 9 credits in psychology courses may be the requirement for one school. Find out if there are any tests you will need to take to get into your Master’s programs. For counseling, the GRE is needed. Depending on when the tests are offered, my advice is to take it during the summer when you don’t also have a full course load of classes to study for. By the end of summer, I had narrowed it down to schools that I was interested in and started to visit schools.
