On-Campus Interviewing Policies and Procedures for Students Penn State Altoona hosts employment recruiters throughout the academic year. On-Campus Interviewing is available to all undergraduate students of The Pennsylvania State University. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students can access a list of employers that are participating in On-Campus Interviewing throughout the academic year at http://www.altoona.psu.edu/career/employerlist.htm. If a student would like to interview with an employer participating in On-Campus Interviewing at Penn State Altoona, then they will need to register with the Career Services Office in 126 Slep and see Linda Kitt or email Linda at lsk6@psu.edu. Students must have a resume prepared for employers to review. If you do not currently have a resume, contact Career Services at 949-5058 for an appointment with a counselor to have your resume critiqued prior to the resume submission deadline for interviewing with an employer. If students need help with interviewing, access an interviewing handout at http://www.altoona.psu.edu/career/docs/Interviewing_Skills_Booklet.pdf or you can make an appointment with a career counselor to discuss interviewing strategies or you can schedule a mock interview simulation. Students are responsible for scheduling their interview time slot with Linda Kitt. Students must be 10-15 minutes early for their interviewing appointment. Students must dress in full professional dress for the interview. DAY OF THE INTERVIEW Arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview time. Report to 126 Slep, Career Services Office, check in with the Staff Assistant, have a seat in the reception area, and wait for the employer to call you. If you have any questions that arise throughout the interviewing process, please see a staff member in Career Services. MISSED INTERVIEW POLICY If circumstances require cancellation of an interview, the student must contact the Career Services Office both verbally and in writing two business days before the interview date. The only acceptable reasons for cancellations are: 1) you are faced with an emergency or illness; 2) you have a site interview; or 3) you have accepted another job offer. Do NOT cancel your interview directly with the employer. We will only accept cancellations by telephone the day of and only for illness. Otherwise, interviews cancelled the day of the employer’s visit are considered no shows and you are expected to write a letter to the employer then submit the letter of apology for review to the Career Services Office and upon approval, you will be responsible for sending said letter to the employer. Students selected for interviews who fail to appear for a scheduled interview for any reason will be considered no shows. No shows will have their interviewing privileges withdrawn immediately. The first time you miss an interview you will be withheld until a letter of explanation/apology is written to the employer. This letter and a stamped envelope addressed to the employer must be provided to Career Services. We will mail it and then reactivate your permission to use the On Campus Interviewing program. The second offense will result in privileges being withdrawn permanently. WHEN DO I REGISTER FOR ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWING? Because employers prefer to interview candidates who are within a few months of graduation, the following times are suggested to register for interviews with the On-Campus Interviewing program.
INFORMATION SESSIONS Many employers schedule information sessions before their interviews, to present information about their company and opportunities. Attendance at the company information sessions for all students invited to interviews is expected – employers consider these events to be a part of the interview process. Students not selected to interview may also attend information sessions. Check the website at http://www.altoona.psu.edu/career/employerlist.htm for information sessions of future employer visits. JOB OFFERS You are expected to notify employers who offer you a position of an acceptance or non-acceptance of an offer in a timely manner, accept an offer of employment in good faith, withdraw from the recruiting process after accepting an offer of employment and discontinue pursuit of a position with other employers upon graduation. Candidates who accept a position and then renege will result in the permanent removal of your interview privileges through Career Services. WHO CAN ASSIST ME WITH SPECIFIC QUESTIONS? Students can contact Career Services to make an appointment with a career counselor to assist you in discussing your interests, qualifications, and the job search in general. To meet with a career counselor set up an appointment in 126 Slep Student Center between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday or call 949-5058.
