These 3-credit courses (unless otherwise noted) are open to anyone and are general education courses that would apply to most degrees at Penn State Altoona. Keep these courses in mind in case you drop a course during the semester, or just want to pick up something extra.

COURSES OFFERED IN THE FALL 2009 SEMESTER

ANTH 021: Introduction to Biological Anthropology
The role of human biology and evolution in culture, society, and behavior.

BB H 146: Introduction to Health and Human Sexuality
An examination of human sexuality as it relates to health.

BI SC 003: Environmental Science
Kinds of environments, past and present uses and abuses of natural resources, disposal of human wastes, prospects for the future. Students who have passed BIOL 220 or any other upper-level ecology course in biology may not schedule this course.

BI SC 004: Human Body: Form and Function
A general survey of structure and function from conception through growth and reproduction to death. Students who have passed BIOL 129 and 141 may not schedule this course.

CAS 100A: Effective Speech
Principles of communication, implemented through presentation of speeches with some attention to group discussion and message evaluation.

CN ED 301: Student Organization Management
Exploration and development of leadership and group process skills necessary for effectively managing student organizations in higher education settings.

ENGL 015: Rhetoric and Composition
Instruction and practice in writing expository prose that shows sensitivity to audience and purpose.
Prerequisite: ENGL 004 or satisfactory performance on the English proficiency

HD FS 129: Introduction to Human Development and Family Studies
Introduction to psychosocial and family development at all stages of the individual and family life cycle

HIST 011: World History II
Social, economic, and political evolution of societies and cultures from1500 to the present.

HIST 012: The History of Pennsylvania
Chronological and topical survey, emphasizing immigration of diverse ethnic groups and religious, political, economic, and social developments, including industrialization and urbanization.

HIST 020: American Civilization to 1877
A historical survey of the American experience from its colonial beginnings through the Civil War and Reconstruction

KINES 045: Basic Scuba
This class is designed to teach students the necessary skills for enjoyable and safe diving. Students who complete this course will not receive PADI Open Water Certification. Please contact the instructor for further information regarding certification.

This course has a $139.00 additional fee

MATH 021: College Algebra I
Quadratic equations, equations in quadratic form, word problems, graphing, algebraic fractions, negative and rational exponents, and radicals. Prerequisite: MATH 004 or satisfactory performance on the mathematics proficiency examination.

MUSIC 007: Evolution of Jazz
Study of the origins and development of jazz as an art form.

PSYCH 281: Introduction to Industrial-Organizational Psychology
Personnel selection, training, accident prevention, morale, and organizational behavior. Prerequisite: PSYCH 100

SO SC 001: Urbanization
An overview of the social sciences, including an interdisciplinary analysis of the urban process.

LER 100: Employment Relations
Introductory analysis of the employment relationship and of the interrelated interests of managements, workers, unions, and the public.

Review of research and application of behavior principles in the areas of management and supervision. Prerequisite: PSYCH 100, PSYCH 281, or 3 credits MGMT

RL ST 120: New Testament
Introduction to the history, literature, and religion of early Christianity in its Jewish-Hellenistic setting.

SO SC 001: Urbanization
An overview of the social sciences, including an interdisciplinary analysis of the urban process.
