The Black Student Union
The Black Student Union develops and provides cultural and political enrichment for African-Americans and all students at Penn State Altoona. The BSU intends to develop students educationally and socially, to promote their positive self-identification with their history and culture, and to recognize individual talent. The organization also publishes a newsletter which addresses items of interest to the African-American community and acknowledges its members' accomplishments. It also addresses political issues affecting African-American students. The Black Student Union maintains a full compliment of officers including a director of public relations and a political action officer among others. Together the staff maintains an open relationship with the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Division of Student Affairs to provide services and recreation for all students. For more information, contact the Black Student Union, Room 109C Slep Student Center.
The Black Student Union also sponsors other programs including movies, panel discussions, plays, art exhibits, concerts and nationally known speakers. Annual events include the Pajama Jammie Jam and Kwanzaa.
During the months of January and February, Penn State Altoona celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and African-American Heritage Month respectively. Activities are coordinated by the Black Student Union, the Office of Student Life, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
