Student organizations
The HDFS Student Association
Formed in the fall and spring of the 2006-2007 school year, this organization is open to all. As its mission it plans to provide a forum for HDFS majors, and others who share similar interests to have some fun together, and to create opportunities to talk about careers in the field, meet with alumni, or others who work in Human Services, as well as engaging in some community service activities. The faculty advisor is Mark O. Jarvis, who can be reached as
moj103@psu.edu.
Kappa Omicron Nu, National Honor Society
Penn State Altoona is the home of the Nu Kappa Chapter of Kappa Omicron Nu a National Honor Society for students and professionals in family studies and consumer sciences. Students with an outstanding academic record (gpa greater than 3.25) are nominated for membership when they have completed 45 credits (usually the spring term of the Sophomore year). As there is also a chapter at University Park, students who are inducted into KON while at Altoona, are automatically members if they transfer to UP.

Our ANGEL site
The department has a "group" on ANGEL, and once you enter the major you will be added to this group. On this site you will find announcements, information about internships, and jobs, examples of syllabi, and copies of things like this handbook, or checklists for the major. It is a place for faculty to post informative announcements for a course that may be new, or offered only rarely. There is also a bulletin board for book swaps. ANGEL runs groups on the model of a class, so there is supposed to be someone "in charge." However, it is possible to give a variety of people some editing privileges, and anyone in the group can send e-mail to all of us, or post to a bulletin board. Think of this site as both a source of information, and a way of being in touch with the faculty and your fellow classmates.
