Freedom From Smoking
An American Lung Association program to help you quit smoking
What is it?
Freedom from Smoking offers a systematic, positive approach to quitting. The program emphasizes mastery of one’s own health and well-being, with activities and assignments assisting smokers in changing their behavior.
How much is it?
Free.
When is it?
You will meet weekly in a group format for approximately one hour. Some exceptions are made to meet with students individually. Check the calendar (hot) for the next group time.
How long will it last?
The group usually runs for seven weeks; however, depending on the needs of the group, participants may meet more briefly or longer.
What is expected of me?
You are responsible for completing any outside work. You also are expected to be respectful of other group members.
What can I expect from the health educator?
The nurse educator is a trained Freedom from Smoking facilitator
and is also certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics in the Clean Air for
Healthy Children program. She will come prepared with handouts, feedback and support centering on issues such as:
- Assessing smoking patterns and companion habits (such as driving, socializing, etc.
- Dealing with nicotine addiction, including nicotine replacement therapy
- Dealing with cravings
- Symptoms of recovery
- Stress relief and relaxation techniques
- Preventing weight gain
- Relapse prevention
- Finding motivation and more…
