Special Notes on this Tutorial
To use this tutorial you must have a working install of an operating system (OS) be it Linux, Windows, or Mac It
doesn't matter. This is because firefox is a cross-platform web browser that is easily one of the best on the market --
and it's free.
Step One: Downloading Firefox
The first thing you need to do obviously is download firefox. It can be obtained at
http://mozilla.org You will need to download either the
binary or source for your particular operating system. If you are a Windows user, go to Step Two(B), if you're a
Unix/Linux user, go to Step Two(A)
Step Two(A): Unpacking the Browser and starting the Configuration for Unix/Linux
Linux/Unix users, or anyone else using the source packages will need to use the command tar -xzvf
firefox.tar.gz remembering to replace with the number that is on your tar.gz.
This will unpack the file. you will need start the installer by changing to the directory where firefox unpacked
itelf with the command: cd /path/to/directory once this is done, you will type sh /path/to/firefox/setup
This will start the configuration program
Step Two(B): Unpacking the Browser and starting the Configuration for Windows
If you are on a windows system, all you will have to do is go to the explorer, and surf to wherever you saved the file.
Once you see the icon for the .exe you will need to click on it to start the install.
Step Three: Configuring firefox
Firefox will at this point have a few menus that will ask you for information about how you would like to install.
You will fill in these fields, and click next. Upon completion firefox is installed, and ready for use.
Adding bookmarks
Bookmarks are a link that you add to a menu on the browser so that you can easily navigate back to a site you've
particularly liked without memorizing the URL of the site. To add a bookmark you will need to go to the toolbar
at the top of the internet explorer screen and click on the book marks section. When you get there, you will need to
click on the Add Bookmark option. You will now be prompted to give the book mark a title, do so and click
okay. Now, to access a bookmark you will need to click on the bookmarks tab at the top of the screen again,
then click on the bookmark in the menu below that you would like to visit.
Tabbed Browsing
One advantage of firefox and netscape both have over most other major browsers is that it has a feature called tabbed
browsing. This means that you can have several different web pages open in one browser, and helps alleviate a lot of
clutter on your desktop. To open a tab to start browsing in you can either hit and hold control and t
with the firefox browser focused or you can simply go to file in the toolbar at the top of the program and
then select new tab.
