Special Notes on this Tutorial
To use this tutorial, you must have a computer, a set of screwdrivers (if needed to open the case), and a hard drive
to replace the old one or to just install in your computer.
Step One: Opening the Case.
The first thing you should do before installing any type of hardware in your computer, is to open up the computer,
and become familiar with where all the parts are and what they do. Remember to never install hardware on a carpeted
floor, this will cause static that will potentially damage the internal parts of your computer. Instead, place
down card board, and make sure you are well grounded. To open your computer case, generally you will need to look in
the back of the case for a couple of screws that hold the side onto the rest of the case. Unscrew these with your
screw driver, and slide the case down to reveal the inner workings of the computer.
Step Two: Configuring the Jumpers
Now set the jumpers on the back of your hard drive. Jumpers tell the drive what start up sequence it is in.
If this hard drive is a back up, then make it a slave. If it is the main hard drive make it the master. Consult the
directions for the proper jumper configuration. A Map for the jumpers are usually placed somewhere on the hard
drive.
Step Three: Removing the old Hard Drive
You will take out the old hard drive by unscrewing or unclipping the side and sliding it out, and unplugging all of
the cable attached to it.
Step Four: Did it work?
Once this is done, you will simply slide the new hard drive back into the slot you just removed the old one from,
and screw it in. Then, you will need to attach the IDE cable back into the hard drive. At this point you can put the
case back together because you've just installed the new hard drive.
