Special Notes on this Tutorial
To use this tutorial you must have a working install of an operating system (OS) be it Linux, Windows, or Mac It doesn't matter. This is because Thunderbird is a cross-platform e-mail client that easily outperforms every other client-side e-mail program. This tutorial also assumes that you have Thunderbird installed correctly for your particular OS.

Step One: Starting Thunderbird Configuration
The first step, of course, will be to open up you installation of Thunderbird. You will find the toolbar at the top. Go to file, then go to new, then select account. You will now be confronted by a menu with four options (Email acount, Movemail, RSS News & Blogs, and Newsgroup Account) You will select the radio button for E-mail account, and click next. Now, you will be prompted for your username, and e-mail address supply them, and hit next. Now, on this screen you will see a radio button at the top make sure that it is set for POP and not IMAP; below this you must fill out the boxes for the incoming and outgoing servers. For incoming you will enter email.psu.edu and for outgoing, you will enter smtp.psu.edu.. When this is done, click next. Now, you will have to enter your username, and click next. You will just have to click next at the next screen. On the last screen you can click next, and it will finish the configuration.

Step Two: Setting up SSL Authentication
In order to use Thunderbird it is imperative to use SSL authentication. For directions no how to use SSL authentication visit http://helpdesk.psu.edu/email/sslconfig.html

Step Three: Using the client
To get mail you will need to click the get mail button at the top of the program. The rest should be pretty self-explanatory.
