Special Notes on this Tutorial
To use this tutorial you must have a working install of Windows. It is also assumed that you have a working modem
installed correctly, and that you have a registered copy of Norton anti-virus installed on your computer.
Step One: Scanning for Infection
You will notice at the main screen of Norton that at the right hand side there are options such options as View History,
Scan, Preferences, etc. These options allow you to change the way Norton performs scans, as well as many other useful
features. The scan feature allows you to scan either a floppy disk or your hard drive for viruses. To scan a floppy
disk, just insert the disk and click on Scan a floppy disk. To scan your whole hard drive, or just a section of it,
click on Scan Computer. Once scan a computer is selected, you can choose to either scan the whole hard drive, or
just a certain folder or directory. This is very useful if you do a large amount of downloading into one directory
and what to make sure you do not have infected files. Once you select what you want to scan, hit the Scan button.
You will then see a dialog box that shows you the files that are currently being scanned. At the bottom of this
dialog box you will be able to see if any viruses were detected. If they were, you can either delete the infected
file, or quarantine it. Quarantining it removes the file from its current directory, and prevents the virus from
spreading to other parts of the computer.
Step Two: Updating Norton
To manually update your computer, click the Live Update button on the Norton start page. It will open up this window.
This will make sure you computer will be able to find the newest viruses. You need to then click Update Everything
Now. Norton will now search for the updated files it needs. When it finds them it will begin to download them. Now
you virus definitions should be updated. Click restart to restart your computer.
Step Three: Quarantine and Removal
Next, reopen the program, and run the scan. If Norton Antivirus finds a virus a notification will pop up. Sometimes
Norton will be able to fix the virus; however, if it is not, it will quarantine the virus and give you more
information about it. This means it was found and is being contained. If this happens to you, write down the virus
name, and go to http://www.symantec.com/search/. Now type in the name of the virus and hit search. This will bring
up a list of results. Pick the one that has the virus that has infected your computer. Read the page thoroughly,
because it will have instructions on virus removal.
