Special Notes on this Tutorial
To use this tutorial you must have a working install of Windows. It is also assumed that you have a working modem
installed correctly, and that you have a registered copy of Norton anti-virus installed on your computer.
If you are going to use a spyware detection/removal program then you will need to have that installed as well.
This tutorial uses lavasoft's ad-aware, which is a free program that will detect and remove spyware from your
computer. It can be obtained from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/.
Virus Step One: Scanning for Infection
If you suspect your computer has been infected by a virus, you need to open up Norton Antivirus and perform a
live update. You need to check the boxes of each drive you want to scan. Next you need to choose Scan Computer
and then press Scan.
Virus Step Two: Quarantine and Removal
If Norton Antivirus finds a virus a notification will pop up. Sometimes Norton will be able to fix the virus;
however, if it is not, it will quarantine the virus and give you more information about it. This means it was found and
is being contained. If this happens to you, write down the virus name, and go to http://www.symantec.com/search/.
Now type in the name of the virus and hit search. This will bring up a list of results. Pick the one that has the
virus that has infected your computer. Read the page thoroughly, because it will have instructions on virus
removal.
Spyware Step One: Scanning for spyware
First of course you will need to have a spyware removal tool installed. Once you've installed the program you will
need to open it via the desktop icon, or even the start menu. Once this has been completed you will need to go to
the section to the left that has the option update virus definitions once this is done you will go through a
couple screens with update directions. Then, when this is done, you will need to go to the main menu of the program
and hit Scan for viruses now This will perform the scan.
Spyware Step Two: Quarantine and Removal
If there is spyware found you will be notified, and will need to hit next. This will quarantine and remove the spyware
if it cannot remove the spyware, you will be notified, and will need to write down what couldn't be fixed. Now, you
will need to do a search for the name of the spyware, and try to find directions for removal. If you are
unable to find removal instructions, you should report to or call the help desk for further assistance.
