Honors Program Benefits
  • Challenging and exciting coursework that will appear as Honors credits on your academic record

  • Field trips to places such as the Smithsonian Institution, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water

  • Special academic seminars, arts events, and social gatherings

  • Priority class registration

  • The Presidential Scholarship (first and second year students) and the Penn State Altoona Honors Scholarship (third and fourth year students).  Both are competitive awards amounting to about $1,000 for the school year.

  • Book vouchers (about $100, awarded each spring to 20 or so students)

Here is extra explanation on two Honors benefits:

Study Abroad
As an Honors Student, you have unique opportunities for participating in the Altoona Study Abroad programs.  In addition to having an excellent chance to gain the competitive awards available from the Study Abroad office, the Honors Program will contribute $500 toward your costs.
For more information about Penn State Altoona's Study Abroad, click here.  This year, we are encouraging three trips: Liverpool England, Paris France, and Vienna Austria.

Honors Living Area
Penn State Altoona offers a special Honors Living Area on campus for our Honors Students in Spruce Hall.  Built in 1987, Spruce Hall consists of suites. In each suite, four students share two bedrooms and a private bathroom. Historically, Spruce Hall has been reserved mostly for sophomores but is available now to first-year Honors Students. One wing of Spruce Hall on the third floor will be the Honors Residence Area. Two suites will be reserved for women and two reserved for men, for a total of 16 Honors Students. Spaces will be allotted on a first come, first served basis.  Please contact the Honors Coordinator (gxw20) if you are interested.
