FALL 2003...
Christodoulos Family Rooted in Penn State
Christodoulos Family Rooted in Penn StateThe genealogy of Helen Christodoulos' family is a "Penn State Tree" with many branches. In addition to Helen, sixteen members of the extended Christodoulos family, including two brothers, a brother-in-law, and nine nieces and nephews, earned Penn State degrees, with all but four attending Penn State Altoona before transferring to University Park.

Helen Christodoulos earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education in 1968 and master's degree in counseling education in 1971. She has completed all credit requirements toward her doctorate. Christodoulos devoted twenty-eight years to the Altoona Area School District as an elementary school teacher, and spent several summers as a Head Start Playground Supervisor. She continues to serve as a substitute teacher for the District. A second vice president on the original Altoona Campus Alumni Board in 1958, she began her second term as an Alumni Board member in January 1999, serving the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society. Most recently, Christodoulos was inducted into the prestigious Ivyside Society at a gala event in September 2003.

"Because I had to finance my own education as an undergraduate, Altoona Campus was an answer to my prayers," Christodoulos said. "I was able to live at home, and the wonderful instructors provided me with the advantage I needed. For this, I shall always be grateful that it was here. I am thankful to Penn State Altoona for providing the opportunity I so needed."

Christodoulos' two brothers—Harry '55 and Charles J. '54, '56g—both entered the medical profession. Harry became a pharmacist after completing studies at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and Charles earned his medical degree at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta. Helen's brother-in-law, James M. Hughes, Jr., '51 is a retired Penn State Altoona engineering faculty member.

The following are the names of Christodoulos' nieces and nephews, along with class years and current occupations:

Holly Hughes Means '72, an interior designer/decorator in Westerville, OH; Hope Hughes Furrer '73, an architectural engineer who owns her own firm in Baltimore, MD; Anthony Nasralla '76, President and Chief Executive Officer of Titusville Area Hospital in Titusville, PA; Adam Crist '80, a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army Reserves and high school science teacher in Las Vegas, NV; Happy Hughes Singler '82, a chemical engineer and owner of a gymnastics academy in Binghamton, NY; Julie Batrus Carbaugh '83, an engineer in Reston, VA; Basil "Bill" Crist '84, an engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Hollidaysburg;PA, James "J.B." Batrus '94, a marketing specialist in Altoona, PA; and great niece Wendy Little Kimble '98, a biochemist in Sterling, VA.

Also of note, the spouses of Hope Hughes Furrer (David Furrer'72), Anthony Nasralla (Karen Nasralla '77), Julie Batrus Carbaugh (John Carbaugh '83), and Wendy Little Kimble (Benjamin Kimble '98) also are Penn State graduates.
