AlumniFrom the President
I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years as a director of the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society. It is with a great deal of pride and humility that I accept being elected president of such a distinguished organization. I have a tremendous interest in Penn State Altoona, having literally grown up with the campus. My father, Robert L. Smith, helped to found Penn State Altoona in 1939, and I have seen the campus in almost every stage of development. With the excellent leadership of Amy MacIntyre and the Penn State Altoona staff, the Board has accomplished many notable projects during the 2005-2006 year. Of particular interest was the Midwinter Dance, our biggest fundraiser for the year. Many of us worked hard to make it a success and had a lot of fun in doing so. We provided pizza and bottled water to students preparing for and taking finals during both semesters. In support of the community, we had several Adopt-A-Highway cleanups on Juniata Gap Road. Everyone's support for these and other activities was much appreciated. The Board has a full slate of activities planned for the 2006-2007 year, which began with a welcome to freshmen as they entered Penn State Altoona, where we provided bottled water and other items to these students and their families. We are certainly looking forward to an action-packed and fun year. I urge you to participate in our activities and to seek information about joining our Society's Board of Directors. Alumni of any institution are extremely important to its sustenance, and Penn State is very fortunate to boast the largest dues-paying alumni association in the country. Accordingly, the Board's common goal is to support Penn State Altoona and Chancellor Bechtel in every manner possible—financially and socially—and to offer a chance for good fellowship and enjoyment as we work to accomplish that goal. For the glory,
