AlumniMaking a Difference
From the very first semester that Danielle Corrigan stepped onto campus, the Tyrone, Pennsylvania, native established herself as both a student with much promise and an active and committed student leader. Corrigan, a spring 2006 graduate of the college, made it her goal to make a difference at Penn State Altoona and sought out many opportunities to do so. For her contributions to Penn State Altoona and the community, she was awarded the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society Student Award for Outstanding Service. The award recognizes a student who has significantly contributed to Penn State Altoona by volunteering his or her talent and time on behalf of the institution. Consideration is given to nominees whose service to Penn State Altoona has enhanced the reputation of the institution among internal and external audiences, bolstered the University's admissions initiatives, or stimulated increased involvement of students, faculty, staff, and alumni in the life of the college. An active leader during her four years at the college, Corrigan's impact at Penn State Altoona continues today through the student organization that she founded—Being United for Social Transformation (BUST). BUST serves as an active and dynamic organization; its initiatives have included: coordinating education sessions and fundraisers for the AIDS Intervention Project of Blair County and coordinating World AIDS day, during which Corrigan helped to raise more than $5,000; organizing a student voter registration drive for the 2004 presidential election that resulted in more than 700 registrants; and coordinating a Take Back the Night program to raise awareness of violence against women in Blair County. Corrigan also organized a clothing drive to benefit the Family Services of Blair County's Domestic Abuse Shelter. Corrigan's involvement and awards include:
