Lecture Series Set to Launch

An advisory council consisting of alumni, business and community leaders, and philanthropists from throughout Blair County and beyond is working with Penn State Altoona staff to create a lecture series that will bring some of the world's most fascinating personalities to Altoona for lectures and discussions.

Modeled after the premier lecture programs in the country, Penn State Altoona's series will include a student forum, public lecture, and post-lecture reception with the speaker. At present, plans call for the scheduling of one lecture in fall 2008 and one in spring 2009.

The Lecture Series Advisory Council will be meeting this fall to select the first two speakers from among a list of distinguished individuals who are widely celebrated for their professional achievements and impact on society. Members of the Lecture Series Advisory Council are Ann Benzel, Tera Herman, Lee Hite, Ron Mallett, Astride McLanahan, and John Wolf.

"Sponsorships, including one to name the lecture series, will enable Penn State Altoona to direct all proceeds to the Penn State Altoona Future Fund," states N. Susan Woodring, director of Development and Alumni Relations and coordinator of the series. "This special fund provides financial support for programs that enrich academic and cultural life on our campus and in the community. The fund also enables the Chancellor to offer emergency assistance to students experiencing a financial crisis. We are anticipating a great response to a series that will bring some of the most fascinating people in the world to Altoona."

Information on the speakers, lecture dates, and sale of tickets will appear in the next issue of Ivy Leaf.
