Penn State Altoona recognized by national publication for Title IX compliance

Penn State Altoona was recognized in a June 29 cover story by the Chronicle of Higher Education for having demonstrated "a history and continuing practice" of expanding women's sports programs in compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. With approximately 450 NCAA Division III schools across the country, Penn State Altoona ranked third in increased opportunities for women from 1998-2006. Penn State Altoona featured forty-one female athletes competing in the sports of basketball, volleyball, swimming, and tennis during the 1998-1999 athletic season. At the conclusion of the 2005-2006 season, Penn State Altoona boasted ninety-four female athletes competing in seven sports with the additions of soccer, cross country, and softball.

In fall 2006, Athletic Director Fredina Ingold announced the formation of women's golf as an official varsity sport, bringing the number of women's athletic teams on campus to eight. The United States Education Department's Office for Civil Rights is responsible for evaluating colleges and universities to ensure proper compliance. The year 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of Title IX.
