Riding for a cause

A group of Penn State Altoona faculty and staff, including Chancellor Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, sported their riding gear and hopped on their bikes Monday morning for an organized ride to downtown Altoona. The group, along with another that biked in from Hollidaysburg, rode in support of the national Rails to Trails Conservancy’s 2010 Campaign for Active Transportation in America. The two groups met up at Heritage Plaza and attended a news conference in which officials from the Committee for an Active Blair County released a case statement detailing plans for crosswalk improvements, sidewalk construction, improved lighting, and trail expansions. That plan has been submitted to Congress on behalf of Blair County in hopes that it will receive federal funding to help make it more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly.
