Stimely earns AMCC Softball All-Conference honors
5.7.08
Penn State Altoona freshman softball player Nicolette Stimely was selected to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Honorable Mention All-Conference team, the league office announced yesterday.  The Lewistown native, who started 32 games at third base, led the Lions in batting average (.384), hits (38), triples (2), home runs (3), RBI (18), and slugging percentage (.556) while committing just seven errors at the hot corner.  In a doubleheader at La Roche, Stimely went 6-7 in the twin bill with two runs scored and three RBI.  Against Hilbert College, the frosh catapulted Altoona to a game two victory by cracking three hits and scoring two of the squad's eight runs.  Pitt-Bradford outfielder Michelle Kushner and Lake Erie first baseman Brittney Binko were named AMCC Co-Players of the Year, and Storm third baseman Katie Puda was the league Rookie of the Year.  To view the entire 2008 AMCC Softball All-Conference teams, CLICK HERE.

Penn State Altoona Athletics holds its annual recognition banquet
5.5.08
The Penn State Altoona Athletics Department held its annual Intercollegiate Athletics Recognition Banquet Sunday evening, May 4, at the Adler Gymnasium.  Nearly 200 student-athletes representing 14 varsity sports teams were celebrated for their athletic and academic achievements over the past year.  Among the highlights were Athletics Director Fredina Ingold and Chancellor Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry honoring the AMCC Championship men's golf team, which will compete at the NCAA Division III Tournament next week in Atlanta, Georgia.  Men's basketball head coach Alan Seretti and women's soccer bench boss Tim Wassell were recognized as AMCC Coaches of the Year, and more than 40 student-athletes earned all-conference accolades for their on-field performances.  Eighty-three Lion student-athletes were recognized for being selected to the Academic All-Conference Team, and junior baseball player Paul Keith was indcuted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.  Special presentations for 53-year-old baseball player John Wilson and volleyball coach Tick Hedrick-Sheaffer along with the announcement of the 2007-2008 Male and Female Scholar Atheltes of the Year helped bring the banquet to an emotional end.  To view the 2007-2008 Intercollegiate Athletics Recognition Banquet web page, CLICK HERE.

Storm ride solid pitching to first round sweep of baseball
5.4.08
The Lake Erie College baseball team used solid pitching performances by Dan Mason, Dan Shreve, and Paul Roskos to down Penn State Altoona Sunday and advance to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference semifinals.  The host Storm swept the best-of-three series from the Lions, taking the opener 2-0 and rallying to take the nightcap 6-4.  Altoona concluded its season at 19-23 overall while Lake Erie moves on to face Frostburg State in next Friday's AMCC semifinal round.  Mason and Shreve combined to fire a five-hit shutout in game one, which started at 9:30 AM.  Mason hurled 5 2/3 innings, scattering four hits and striking out four Lion batters.  Shreve, who would earn two saves on the day, earned his first by pitching 1 1/3 frames of relief and allowing only one hit.  Despite taking the loss, Lion starter Paul Keith (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) threw well enough to win, surrendering two earned runs and eight hits through six innings of work.  The Storm tacked one run on the scoreboard in the second when Keith Trumbauer roped an RBI single that scored Rocky Pfisterer.  Trumbauer stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, but third base runner Mario Lombardo was picked off, and Keith got Ben Willis to ground out to end the threat.  READ MORE

Baseball qualifies for AMCC Tournament, earns #6 seed
4.27.08
The Penn State Altoona baseball team got word Saturday night that it has earned a spot in the upcoming Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs beginning Saturday, May 3.  Because Penn State Behrend swept a doubleheader at Medaille earlier today, the Altoona Lions locked up the 6th and final seed and will travel to #3 seed Lake Erie College this coming weekend for a first round match-up.  The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to the conference semifinals and finals to be played at top seed Penn State Behrend May 9-11.  Penn State Altoona lost two tight games to the Storm on April 19, falling by scores of 4-3 and 8-4.  The Lions return to postseason play after failing to qualify for last season's tournament.  Game one of the series against Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio, begins at 10:00 AM with game two approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.  If a third game is needed, it will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of game two.  In case of inclement weather, the games will be pushed back one day to Sunday, May 4.  Continue to check this site and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference website for the latest news and updates.

Wilson, Petulla finish careers in style with sweep
4.27.08
Hollywood couldn't have written a better script than what unfolded Sunday afternoon on the Penn State Altoona baseball diamond during senior recognition day.  Playing in their last home games at the Ivyside Field, seniors Tony Petulla (Osceola Mills, PA/Philipsburg) and 53-year-old John Wilson (Pittsburgh, PA/Fifth Avenue) stole the show, helping the Lions sweep both ends of a doubleheader from Franciscan by scores of 10-5 and 9-1.  Altoona finishes the regular season at 19-21 overall and hopes to enter next weekend's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs as the #6 seed based on results from later today.  Wilson, making his first career start, hit leadoff and played right field.  Petulla, an anchor in the Lion lineup since his arrival in 2005, batted fourth and roamed center field.  In the opener, Wilson blooped a single over the first baseman's head to begin the game, then singled again through the right side in his second at-bat.  He walked in the fourth before bouncing into a fielders choice in his last plate appearance in the fifth, concluding his day 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.  Petulla was his usual self in the game, going 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.  READ MORE
