WELCOME TO THE
2007-2008
Penn State Altoona
Intercollegiate Athletics
Recognition Banquet!

The Intercollegiate Athletics Recognition Banquet is a time of celebration and reflection on the accomplishments of the 14 varsity athletic teams at Penn State Altoona.  The event is held annually at the Adler Gymnasium and continues to be an overwhelming success.  The evening features award presentations by individual coaches and Athletic Director Fredina Ingold, remarks from Chancellor Lori Bechtel, and student-athlete inductions into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society.  Each head coach gets the opportunity to present four awards:  Most Valuable Player, Coaches Award, Rookie of the Year, and Sportsmanship Award.  One male and one female athlete will also be named Scholar Athlete of the Year, in recognition of outstanding performance both on the field and in the classroom.  The 2007-2008 banquet will recognize our AMCC Championship men's golf team, which won its second consecutive conference crown and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  A complete list of the 2007-2008 award winners and a number of pictures from the banquet can be found below.

WE LOVE YOU, TICK!

Volleyball coach and Kinesiology instructor Tick Hedrick-Sheaffer (right) was honored at the banquet for earning her 500th win after returning as head coach of the volleyball program on September 28, 2007.  She is retiring from teaching and coaching (again) after more than 30 years at the job.

FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Miss Sheena Cooper

Sheena is the only player in Penn State Altoona volleyball history to have earned all-conference recognition four consecutive years.  She was a 2nd team honoree as a freshman, earned Honorable Mention honors in both 2005 and 2006, and collected 2nd team distinction in 2007.

She ranks second on the all-time kills list at Penn State Altoona with 987.  Sheena boasts a career average of 2.67 kills per game and ranks in the top 10 all-time in a number of statistical categories.

Academically, Sheena boasts a  3.7 GPA and graduated ahead of schedule this past December with a degree in Elementary Education.  She has made the Dean’s List all seven semesters at Penn State Altoona and has been named an AMCC Academic All-Conference selection four straight years.  She is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Mr. Tony Petulla

A career .400 hitter and two-time Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, Tony Petulla will leave Penn State Altoona as arguably the best player in program and league history.

The Clarion transfer won the AMCC Triple Crown in 2005 and garnered 1st team all-league honors in both ‘05 and ‘06.  The five-time AMCC Player of the Week is also no slouch in the classroom, sporting a 3.56 GPA and earning AMCC Academic All-Conference honors all three seasons.

He is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society and has made the Dean’s List four semesters.

Petulla will graduate this spring with a degree in Criminal Justice and is currently receiving looks from professional scouts.

Chi Alpha Sigma Inductees

Penn State Altoona baseball player Paul Keith became the newest Lion student-athlete inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.  To be inducted, the student-athlete must be at least a junior in standing and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4.  Selection for membership is made by a school's athletic department in conjunction with the candidate's head coach.  Outstanding scholarship, earned athletic letters, and excellent character and citizenship are qualities of Chi Alpha Sigma members.  Every new inductee receives a National College Athlete Honor Society medallion.

Special Presentation

For the last four seasons, the Penn State Altoona baseball team has featured one of the most unique and inspiring athletes in the country in 53-year-old John Wilson.  Having just completed his final season of eligibility in 2008, John's story of beating the odds, overcoming adversity, and inspiring others has been well documented on a local, regional, and national level.  The Pittsburgh native will graduate in Fall 2008 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies.  Penn State Altoona Chancellor Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry had the plaque above made to commemorate John's outstanding contributions and accomplishments.
