(ERIE, PA:) Penn State Altoona managed just one run and
eight hits through two games as the Lions were swept by Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference rival Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon. Altoona
fell to 7-13 and 2-4 in the league while Behrend upped its record to 14-4
overall and a perfect 6-0 in AMCC action.
Game one was a classic pitchers duel featuring Altoona
right-hander Paul Keith (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) and Behrend stud David
Koerbel. Despite taking the loss, Keith allowed just two runs and eight
hits over six innings of work while striking out five. Koerbel's Lions
scored one run in both the second and third innings which turned out to be
plenty of support for the 6'4" junior.
Koerbel scattered four hits, walked one, struck out nine, and
did not allow an Altoona player to get past second base. Dustin Dubensky
and Joe Breiter each had two hits for Penn State Behrend.
The Altoona bats continued to struggle in the second contest,
again tallying only four base hits off Behrend starter Andrew Chrobak. The
winning hurler fired a complete game, surrendering one unearned run and fanning
four.
Penn State Altoona lefty Kevin Obermeier (York, PA/York
Catholic) threw all six innings, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs.
Behrend scored one run in the first inning, added another in the second, and
picked up two in the fourth to set the score at 4-0.
Altoona's lone run came in the top of the fifth. After a
leadoff double by Jake Cunningham (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) and single by Ryan
Pollicino (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union), sophomore Chad Snook (Lewistown,
PA/Lewistown) reached on a fielders choice, and Cunningham scored on a
subsequent error by the Behrend shortstop.
The squad has a quick turnaround as it travels to Washington &
Jefferson College for a non-conference twin bill tomorrow, April 6, in
Washington, PA. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
