Lions fall to Johns Hopkins in ECAC Holiday Festival championship game

Sunday, January 4, 2009 Lions fall to Johns Hopkins in ECAC Holiday Festival championship game

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fl. - Johns Hopkins University shot 64.9% from the floor (24-of-37) and an equally impressive 63.6% from 3-point range (7-of-11) en route to a 75-45 victory over Penn State Altoona in the bracket championship game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Holiday Festival Sunday night at Disney's Milkhouse Arena.

The Blue Jays used precision offense and stifling man-to-man defense to limit the Lions to 33.3% field goal shooting for the night -- 5-of-21 in the first half -- and only four triples in 14 attempts.  Sophomore Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) was the lone Altoona player in double figures with 10, and teammate Curtis Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) canned three second-half 3-pointers to finish with nine.

After Penn State Altoona took its only lead of the game at 5-3, Hopkins answered with a 9-0 run capped by a Pat O'Connell jumper at the 13:05 mark.  Back-to-back 3-pointers by Phil Beggans followed by a Scott Weisenfed bucket with 9:28 left in the half pushed the Blue Jay advantage to 20-9.

A Zach Spitz (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) jumper with 5:36 on the clock was the Lions' last basket of the period, and Penn State Altoona trailed 28-14 at intermission.

Hopkins scored the first five points of the second half and never allowed Altoona to get closer than 14 points.  Blue Jay center Andrew Farber-Miller notched his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  As a team, the taller Johns Hopkins squad held a 36-20 edge in rebounding and also turned 16 Lion turnovers into 22 points.

Seven other Blue Jay players scored at least six points including Beggans who finished with nine.  JHU got to the free throw line 29 times on the night, converting 20, while Penn State Altoona made 9-of-14 at the charity stripe for 64.3%.

Penn State Altoona (5-5) returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this Thursday, January 8, for a 7:00 PM tip at Pitt-Bradford.
