ATHLETIC NEWSFour players hit double figures as women's basketball wins sixth straightWednesday, January 7, 2009BRADFORD, Pa. - Junior Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) scored a game-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds, and the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team overcame a 13-point first half deficit to win their sixth straight game by a 74-70 count at Pitt-Bradford Wednesday night. The wild affair saw four ties and nine lead changes including four in the second half. Both teams shot above 40% from the floor and 33% from long distance, but the Lions made an impressive 18-of-20 foul shots while Pitt-Bradford was a dismal 3-for-14 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, PA/Horseheads) had 15 points, and freshman Angie Proper (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) and Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Bradford also put four players in double digits led by all-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference player Katie Moore who turned in a monstrous 17 point-17 rebound performance. Whitney Cline added 16 points and 13 boards for the Panthers, who dominated the Lions by a 52-31 margin on the glass. The Panthers scored the first 11 points of the game and led 14-2 before Penn State Altoona woke up and cut the deficit to 18-16 on a Proper 3-pointer with 8:44 left in the half. Bradford hiked its lead back up to 13 just four minutes later only to watch Altoona close the period on a 15-0 run to take a 34-32 advantage into halftime. Pitt-Bradford began the second half on a 14-4 run over the first five minutes to grab a 46-38 lead which would be its biggest of the period. The Lions reclaimed the lead at the 12:46 mark, but the hosts used second-chance opportunities to stretch the advantage back to eight (59-51) with 8:12 remaining. Penn State Altoona chipped away and again took control 64-63 with three minutes and change to play. After a Moore lay up with 4:57 left gave Bradford a four point lead, the Panthers would score just one point until a Janelle Krisulevicz 3-pointer with only 24 ticks on the clock. Meanwhile, Glasser scored the Lions' final eight points and went 6-of-6 at the foul line in the last 38 seconds to seal the win. The Lions improved to 6-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in AMCC play. Altoona forced 22 Pitt-Bradford turnovers that resulted in 25 points and got double the bench production. Sophomore Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had eight of Altoona's 13 assists. Despite yanking 21 offensive rebounds, the Panthers managed only 12 second-chance points. Penn State Altoona is back in action this Saturday, January 10, for an AMCC showdown against Penn State Behrend. Tip time is 2:00 PM at the Adler Gym. MORE INFORMATION...
