Thursday, January 8, 2009 Lions use 3-point discrepancy to cruise past Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. - The theme of 'live by the three, die by the three' told the entire story Thursday night as Penn State Altoona made 10-of-15 3-pointers en route to a 74-58 victory over Pitt-Bradford, which shot a frigid 1-for-22 from behind the arc in both squads first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game of 2009.

Sophomore Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) canned four long balls for all 12 of his points, and twin brothers Colin and Curtis Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) combined for five treys and 36 points.

Colin Geiger notched a game-high 23 points, while brother Curtis added 13 for the Lions, now 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the AMCC.

Altoona shot 51.1% from the floor on the evening and connected on 16 of its 22 free throw attempts.  The visitors also capitalized on 15 Panther turnovers, tallying 23 points off those miscues while committing only nine of their own.

With the game tied at 19-19 at the eight minute mark, the Lions used a crucial 12-0 run to grab a 31-19 advantage that eventually became a 36-25 lead at intermission.  Altoona totally controlled the second half, jumping out to leads of 21 on three separate occasions while allowing the hosts to get no closer than nine.

Bradford was fronted by Shawn Spindler's 14 points, and teammate Dan Heisey added 11.  The Panthers shot 36.8% from the floor and made only 1-of-16 treys in the first half.

Penn State Altoona returns to action this Saturday, January 10, for a 4:00 PM tip against Penn State Behrend.  It's Take A Kid to the Game Day at the Adler Gym as all youngsters 12 and under are admitted free.
