ATHLETIC NEWSBalanced attack helps women's basketball down Behrend, move to 5-0 in AMCCSaturday, January 10, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - Six players scored in double figures for the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team, which shot 43.1% from the floor and held a 47-38 advantage on the glass en route to a convincing 81-62 victory over Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon at the Adler Gym. The Lions moved to 7-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, while Penn State Behrend fell to 4-7 and 2-3 in the league. Junior Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) poured in 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half and added eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Freshman Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) recorded her second double-double of the year, notching career-highs in both points (13) and rebounds (15). Sophomore Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) added 13 points and a team-high eight assists, and classmate Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) netted all 11 of her points in the first half. Freshmen Marissa Lucas (Washington, PA/Trinity) and Katie Polkowski (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) both scored 10 for Altoona, which made 31 field goals and held a 41-35 lead at halftime. A Glasser jumper less than three minutes into the game gave Altoona a 7-5 lead which they would never relinquish. After Behrend's Kim Pol converted a lay up with 5:42 left in the opening half to bring Erie within a point, Altoona used a 7-0 spurt capped by two Polkowski free throws to grab a 35-27 advantage. The hosts opened the second half by scoring 14 of the first 17 points and held a commanding 55-38 lead six minutes into the period. Behrend responded with a 9-0 run of their own and eventually closed the gap to 60-54 with 8:33 remaining. But a decisive 13-2 spurt over the next five minutes that included two Carroll baskets pushed the lead to 17 and erased any comeback hopes by the visitors. Behrend was led by Natalie Engel, who scored 20 points and made 6-of-8 free throws. Erie shot just 32.8% from the floor (21-of-64) and 3-for-14 from 3-point range. Penn State Altoona, which held a 13-2 advantage on second-chance points, will travel to Frostburg State this Wednesday, January 14, for a 6:00 PM tip. MORE INFORMATION...
