Men's and women's swimming earn AMCC wins over Pitt-Bradford

Sunday, January 11, 2009 Men's and women's swimming earn AMCC wins over Pitt-Bradford

ALTOONA, Pa. - Competing in the first of two important Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference dual meets, the Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams passed test number one by handling Pitt-Bradford Sunday afternoon at the Adler Pool.

The Lion men won eight of 12 events to claim a 106-87 victory, while the Altoona women took first place in 10 events as well as 1 meter diving to earn the 145-55 win.

On the women's side, freshman Whitney Weston (South Williamsport, PA/South Williamsport) was the lone double winner after capturing first place in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (12:23.82) and 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.40).

Classmate Brianne Yingling (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) won the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:12.93), and Sarah Rosser took the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:28.63).  Other winners included Kaitlyn Knott (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:10.07), Brittany Bauer (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) in the 200 Yard IM (2:42.21), and Emily McAleer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) in the 50 Yard Freestyle (28.02).

The Lions also emerged victorious in the 200 Yard Medley Relay and the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.  Freshman Mollie Torello (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) tallied a 121.15 in the diving portion of the meet.

For the men, sophomores Dan Bodde (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) and Bryan Dau (Princeton, NJ/Notre Dame) along with freshman Adam Capatch (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) won two events on the afternoon.

Bodde won the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 1:58.65 and followed that up with a 5:36.21 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.  Dau won the 50 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Butterfly with times of 24.64 and 59.82, respectively.  Capatch continued his impressive season by taking the 200 Yard IM (2:17.29) and 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:06.85).

Both the Penn State Altoona men's and women' swimming and diving teams will return to action this Saturday, January 17, for an AMCC showdown with Penn State Behrend.  Meet time is 1:00 PM at the Adler Pool.
