Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Second-half run propels Frostburg State over men's basketball

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State scored the first twelve points of the second half, and the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team was unable to close that gap in their 75-66 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to the Bobcats Wednesday night.

Five of Frostburg's players scored in double-figures, including 15 from both Nick Sefcik and Keith Hazel.  Busha Koffa also contributed a double-double off of the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Altoona was led by sophomores Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) and Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township), and senior Colin Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove), who all scored 13 points for the Lions.  Freshman Travis White (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) chipped in 11 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds off of the Altoona bench.

After a 31-31 deadlock at halftime, the Bobcats reeled off twelve straight points while Altoona went scoreless in the first three minutes of the second half.

Gaetano and White combined to hit a flurry of threes in the final 15 minutes which closed the deficit to 64-62 with 2:28 remaining.  Frostburg extended its lead thanks to a Sefcik three-pointer at the 2:01 mark, and the Bobcats were then able to hit their free throws down the stretch and put the game out of reach.

Altoona was outrebounded 40-33, and the Bobcats managed to grab 16 offensive boards during the contest.  The Lions shot 11-28 (39.3%) from the three-point arch and 41% overall from the field, but turned the ball over 20 times which led to 31 points for Frostburg.

Frostburg also held a 42-20 advantage in bench points, and a 24-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Altoona falls to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference, and will be back in action this Saturday, January 17, when it will travel to Medaille College to take on the Mavericks.  Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
