ATHLETIC NEWSWomen's basketball rides hot shooting to victory over MedailleSaturday, January 17, 2009BUFFALO, Ny. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team shot nearly 58% from the floor and outscored its opponent 45-30 in the second half in its 77-65 victory against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Medaille College Saturday afternoon. The victory marked only the second time in program history that the Lions have taken down the Mavericks. Altoona's previous record against Medaille was 1-7. Freshman Marissa Lucas (Washington, PA/Trinity) led all scorers with 19 points, and she posted a double-double with 11 rebounds for the Lions. Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) shot 8-12 (67%) from the floor, and Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona), Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) and Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) all added to Altoona's scoring effort by posting 13, 12, and 10 points, repectively. Medaille was led by Carissa Ferrucci, who notched 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, and Amanda Boron, who scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds of her own. After a 35-32 deficit at halftime, Altoona started the second half with a Steiner layup and a Glasser three-pointer which put the Lions ahead for good. Medaille would tie the game on two separate occasions but would never regain the lead. Altoona was outrebound 41-33, and coughed up 22 turnovers, which the Mavericks turned into 26 points of their own. Medaille also held a slim 32-30 advantage in points in the paint, and an 11-4 edge in second chance points. Shooting percentage and sharing the basketball proved to be the difference in the game, as Altoona outshot Medaille 58% to 36%, and dished out 20 assists compared to the Mavericks' 12. The Lions pushed their record to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Altoona is back in action this Monday, January 19, when the squad will take on Mount Aloysius College at the Adler Gymnasium.
