ATHLETIC NEWSMen's basketball uses strong second half to down GreensburgThursday, January 22, 2009GREENSBURG, Pa. - After heading into the locker room at halftime down 37-26, the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team outscored Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Pitt-Greensburg 36-22 over the final 20 minutes to claim a 62-59 win over the Bobcats Thursday night. The Lions used a 23-12 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to tie the score at 49 apiece, and the game was back and forth for the final 10 minutes of play. Altoona held on to a 60-55 lead with 3:55 remaining, but Greensburg's Daniel Waajid and Rashad Davison each hit clutch shots to bring the Bobcats within one-point with 2:25 on the clock. The next basket was scored in the final 15 seconds, when Altoona's Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) drilled a jumper to put the Lions up three. His basket would be the final for either team on the night. Greensburg called a timeout with just under 10 seconds and drew up a play for Steve Persing to force overtime, but his shot would not fall at the buzzer. Altoona used a balanced scoring attack, with Peters scoring a team-high 12 points and Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) chipping in 10 of his own. Junior Sean Stewart (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and Travis White (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) also combined for 17 points off of the Altoona bench. Greensburg used 23 points and 14 rebounds from Waajid, and 12 points from Davison in the contest. The Lions managed to pull out the victory despite shooting just 3-17 (17.6%) from three-point range, and Altoona was outrebounded by a 40-30 margin for the night. But Altoona did hold a significant 21-3 advantage in bench points, and a 24-20 edge in points in the paint. The victory pushes the squad's record to 9-7 overall, and 6-3 in the AMCC. The Lions are back in action this Saturday, January 24, when the squad travels to Buffalo for a conference rematch with Hilbert College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM. MORE INFORMATION...
