ATHLETIC NEWSThomas leads women's basketball to lopsided win over HilbertSaturday, January 24, 2009HAMBURG, Ny. - Freshman Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, and the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team dominated nearly every statistical category during a 69-25 rout of Hilbert College Saturday afternoon. The Lions led from start to finish, forcing 34 Hawk turnovers that resulted in 39 points. Altoona also held a convincing 42-4 edge in the painted area and outscored the Hilbert bench by a 29-2 margin. Thomas was joined in double figures by classmate Angie Proper (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), who scored 14 points and swiped a team-high seven steals. The Lions shot 29-of-63 from the field for 46% and got 15 second-chance points via 17 offensive rebounds. After a Dale Jonathan jumper put Hilbert on the board less than three minutes into the game, the Hawks would not score again until an Amanda Dudek 3-pointer at the 4:55 mark of the first half. Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona held a 25-point lead after a Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) trey with 3:49 left, and the Lions took a 39-7 advantage into intermission. The second half was more of the same, and Altoona grabbed its biggest lead of the afternoon at 67-16 on a Proper jumper with 5:50 remaining. Hilbert ended the game on a 9-2 run, but 25.6% shooting on the day including 3-of-15 in the first half would eliminate any comeback thoughts. The hosts, which fell to 0-17 on the season, were fronted by Dudek's eight points. Penn State Altoona (10-5, 8-2) travels to Franciscan University this Wednesday, January 28, for a 6:00 PM tip against the Barons. MORE INFORMATION...
