ATHLETIC NEWSWhite's career day pushes men's basketball past HilbertSaturday, January 24, 2009HAMBURG, Ny. - Freshman Travis White (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) scored a career-high 25 points for the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team, which shot 61.4% from the floor and canned eight 3-pointers en route to an 86-72 victory over Hilbert College Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were on fire from the field and combined to make 19 treys and 61 field goals. Altoona connected on 17-of-29 buckets in the first half for 58.6% and made 18-of-28 over the final 20 minutes to pull out the win. Hilbert ended the game at 52% from the floor (26-of-50) and made 11 of its 21 3-point attempts. Dan Terrette scored a team-high 16 points in the loss, while teammates Aaron Burbidge and Nick Piccone had 14 and 10, respectively. The back-and-forth first half featured six ties and six lead changes before Altoona used a 15-12 run over the final 6:55 to stake a 42-39 advantage at intermission. Hilbert would get no closer than four throughout the second half and was within 63-58 at the eight-minute mark. But a quick 9-2 spurt capped by five Colin Geiger points helped Altoona seize control at 73-61 and a subsequent 8-0 run that included two more Geiger baskets put the game well out of reach. Geiger and Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) finished with 14 points apiece, and sophomore Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) added 10. White scored 15 points in the first half, went 10-for-12 from the field on the afternoon, and hit all three of his 3-point tries to go along with six assists. The Lions held a huge advantage on the fastbreak, outscoring the Hawks 22-2, and also in the paint, where Altoona maintained a 48-26 edge. Hilbert committed 20 turnovers that led to 22 Lion points, while Penn State Altoona had just nine giveaways. Penn State Altoona (10-7, 7-3) returns to action this Wednesday, January 28, for an 8:00 PM tip at Franciscan University. MORE INFORMATION...
