ATHLETIC NEWSWomen's basketball dominates paint, downs Pitt-Bradford for a second time this seasonWednesday, February 4, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team scored 64 of its 86 points in the paint, and four Altoona players scored at least 14 points as the Lions downed Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Pitt-Bradford 86-76 Wednesday night at the Adler Gymnasium. Altoona was led by a career-high 20 points from Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona), who scored multiple fast break layups for the Lions. Sophomore Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) continued her strong play with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) and Marissa Lucas (Washington, PA/Trinity) notched 15 and 14 points, respectively. Bradford was led by AMCC conference scoring-leader Katie Moore's 18 points and six rebounds, and Whitney Cline's 12 points and seven boards. After leading 39-35 at the half, the Lions went on a 25-15 over the next 13 minutes, and Altoona would convert a flurry of layups and free throws to put the game away for good. The Lions shot a blazing 56.7% from the floor, including 78.6% from the free throw line. Altoona forced 24 Panther turnovers on 20 steals, and the Lions converted those into 24 points on the other end. The Lions also scored 22 fast break points, while Bradford managed just four. Bradford won the bench advantage with a significant 25-11 edge, and the Panthers outrebounded Altoona 39-28. The Lions are back in action this Saturday, February 7, when the squad heads to Erie for a battle with the Penn State Behrend Lions. On January 10 of this season, Altoona claimed a 81-62 victory over Behrend thanks to six Lion players scoring in double-figures. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
