Behrend shoots its way past men's basketball

Saturday, February 7, 2009 Behrend shoots its way past men's basketball

ERIE, Pa. - Penn State Behrend shot an efficient 27-of-50 from the floor (54%), made 10-of-22 shots from beyond the arc, and hit 76.5% of its foul shots to cruise past visiting Penn State Altoona 77-60 Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.

The host Lions had three players score in double figures led by Adam Potter's 18 points.  Teammates Adam Kaiser and Drew Seeker scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Behrend, which held a 30-20 edge in the painted area.

Altoona dropped its second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest and sits at 12-9 overall and 9-5 in the league.  The squad was led by Colin Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) and Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) who each netted 12 points.  Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, PA/Loyalsock Township) chipped in 11.

The visitors started strong and jumped out to a 14-8 lead at the 13:09 mark on a Travis White (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) lay up.  Behrend responded and eventually took the lead for good on a Nick Colella 3-pointer with 9:50 left in the opening half.

After a Behrend 6-0 run, the teams traded jabs before a Seker basket just before halftime gave the hosts a 34-26 intermission lead.

It was all Penn State Behrend in the second half as the Erie Lions outscored Altoona 43-34 and led by as many as 21 points.  Behrend led 52-34 with 12:49 remaining thanks to an 18-8 spurt to begin the period.

Altoona battled back and got to within 10 with less than 11 minutes to play, but the hosts methodically added to their lead and had the margin at 71-51 at the four minute mark.

Penn State Altoona shot 47.9% from the floor and made 12-of-19 baskets (63.2%) in the second half.  The Lions also shot 40% from 3-point range (6-of-15).

Head coach Alan Seretti's squad is back in action this Wednesday, February 11, for a crucial AMCC showdown with Frostburg State.  Tip time is 8:00 PM at the Adler Gym.
