Charger miscues prove costly as women's basketball coasts past LBC

Monday, February 9, 2009 Charger miscues prove costly as women's basketball coasts past LBC

LANCASTER, Pa. - Three players scored in double figures for the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team, which despite an off night shooting forced host Lancaster Bible into 34 turnovers en route to a 55-40 non-conference victory Monday night.

Sophomore Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored a team-high 15 points, while Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/BishopGuilfoyle) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Neither team shot above 27% from the field including the Lions, which made just 21-of-80 field goal attempts. The Chargers were equally poor, connecting on 14-of-53 shots and making only six baskets in the second half.

Altoona outscored LBC 26-16 in the paint and did not trail in the game.

The visitors jumped out to an 18-5 lead midway through the opening half and appeared on their way to a large victory. But Lancaster Bible responded with 13 unanswered points to tie the contest at the 4:49 mark and found themselves down by only five (25-20) at intermission.

Penn State Altoona methodically stretched its lead as the Chargers were unable to reach the 30-point mark until less than seven minutes remained in the game. The Lion advantage reached 16 on two occasions, and Thomas had nine of her 11 points over the final 20 minutes.

Penn State Altoona, which already defeated Lancaster Bible 78-42 on December 11 of this season, improved to 13-8 overall. The Lions have four Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference showdowns remaining beginning with this Wednesday's clash with Frostburg State. Tip time is 6:00 PM at the Adler Gym.
