Wednesday, February 11, 2009 Women's basketball uses strong second half and excellent free throw shooting to down Frostburg

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team shot a school-record 28-of-30 (93.3%) from the free throw line, and the squad outscored Frostburg State 48-27 in the second half to help claim a 79-69 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over the Bobcats Wednesday night at the Adler Gym.

Sophomore Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) connected on all 14 of her free throw attempts for an individual school record in both attempts and percentage, while teammate Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored a career-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Lions.

Thomas also grabbed five rebounds and made all seven of her free throw attempts on the night.

After trailing 42-31 at halftime, Altoona went on an 11-0 run in the first 3:18 of the second half, and the Lions remained in striking distance before claiming their first lead of the game at the 10:59 mark with a 50-49 advantage.  The Bobcats went on a 10-0 run of their own to go up 62-52, but Altoona would counter by scoring 15 of the game's next 19 points, ending with an Angie Proper (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) three-pointer to put the Lions up 67-63 with 1:55 left on the clock.

Carroll, Thomas, and Proper would make a combined twelve free throws from that point on to put the game out of reach for Frostburg.

The Lions posted three double-figure scorers in Thomas (27), Carroll (18), and junior Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center), who scored 10 points and dished out five assists.  Frostburg ended the game with four players in double-figures, including Brittany James, who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bobcats in both categories, and Makeda Peterson, who notched 13 tallies of her own.

Altoona turned 20 Bobcat turnovers into 22 points of its own, and Frostburg held a 38-24 advantage in points in the paint.  The Bobcats also scored 18 second chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds.

With the win, Altoona now moves to 14-8 overall and 10-5 in the AMCC.  Also, the team now holds sole possesion of the conference's second seed for the upcoming AMCC tournament for the time being, and Frostburg will drop into the third spot and a possible tie with Penn State Behrend.  Pitt-Greensburg currently holds the top spot with a 13-1 conference record.

The Lions are back in action this Saturday, February 14, for an AMCC clash with Medaille.  Game time is set for 3:00 PM, and Altoona will be wearing pink uniforms during the game as the squad participate's in its first-ever PinkZone, a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
