ATHLETIC NEWSPoor shooting, turnovers doom men's basketball against FrostburgWednesday, February 11, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team committed more turnovers than made field goals, and the Lions fell 62-55 to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Confernce foe Frostburg State Wednesday night at the Adler Gym. After trailing 56-42 with just 4:16 remaining in the second half, the Lions went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to just six. But Frostburg hit its free throws down the stretch, and the squad was able to force Altoona into missed shots and turnovers to claim the win. Altoona coughed the ball up 20 times to the Bobcats, and the squad shot 16-of-51 (31.4%) from the field. The Lions were led by sophomore Kirk Peters' (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) 21 points and five rebounds. Peters was the only Altoona player to reach double figures, as Eric Gaetano (Montoursville, Loyalsock Township) was the next highest scorer with seven on just 1-of-9 shooting. For Frostburg, Steven Ogg led the squad with 16 points, while Nick Sefcik helped out with 14 points and seven rebounds of his own. Busha Koffa also notched 14 points, and Juan Wansley ripped 11 rebounds to lead the team. Frostburg outscored Altoona 36-22 in the paint, and the Bobcats held a slim 17-15 edge in points off of turnovers. Altoona was able to double Frostburg's bench scoring 20-10, and the Lions were outrebounded 38-29 on the night. Altoona is now 12-10 overall and 9-6 in the conference standings. Frostburg moves to 10-5 in the conference, and both teams will try to grab one of the AMCC's top two seeds, which award a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. The Lions are back in action this Saturday, February 14, when the squad takes on AMCC rival Medaille. Tip time is set for 3:00 PM at the Adler Gymnasium.
