ATHLETIC NEWSShooting woes plague women's basketball in loss to GreensburgWednesday, February 18, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team made just 19-of-65 field goals (29.2%) and was outscored 37-27 in the second half by visiting Pitt-Greensburg as the Lady Bobcats claimed a 67-50 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win Wednesday night at the Adler Gym. Greensburg also used a full-court pressure defense to force the Lions into 24 turnovers that resulted in 28 points. The Lady Bobcats held a 32-18 edge in the paint and used an 18-6 advantage on the fastbreak. Amanda Sheaffer led the victors with a game-high 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Six other Greensburg players scored five points or more including Kelsey Wilcox, who netted nine points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Altoona got 11 points including three 3-pointers from freshman Angie Proper (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) but made just 9-of-37 first-half baskets and found itself down 30-23 at intermission. UPG wasn't much better in the opening stanza, hitting 12-of-32 shots, but exploded out of the gates in the second half to the tune of a 29-6 run. A Sheaffer lay up gave the Lady Bobcats a 30-point lead with 11:41 remaining in the game, and the Lions would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way. Penn State Altoona did get the deficit back under 20 on the second of two Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) free throws. A late Proper lay up made it 60-54 before Greensburg's Jess Mueseler hit a late 3-pointer to set the final. The squads went back and forth in the first half before UPG bolted to an 18-12 lead at the 8:55 mark. The Lions battled back and tied the game less than two minutes later, but the Lady Bobcats closed the period on a 12-5 run to take the seven-point lead into halftime. UPG finished the game 25-for-29 from the floor for 42.9% and shot 48.1% in the second half. The Lady Bobcats have already clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming AMCC playoffs and will host the semifinal and final rounds next weekend. Penn State Altoona dropped to 15-9 overall and 12-5 in the AMCC. They play their last regular season game this Saturday, February 21, at Mount Aloysius. Tip time is 1:00 PM. MORE INFORMATION...
