ATHLETIC NEWSGeiger, Peters lead men's basketball past Pitt-GreensburgWednesday, February 18, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - Senior Colin Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) scored 19 points, sophomore Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) netted a team-high 21, and the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team outscored Pitt-Greensburg 48-28 in the second half to claim a 72-58 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory and snap a four-game losing streak Wednesday night at the Adler Gym. After a sluggish first half in which the Lions shot just 11-of-38 from the floor, Altoona responded by converting 50% of its shots (17-for-34) in the second half, while Pitt-Greensburg managed just seven baskets and 29.2% shooting. Another key factor was turnovers as the Lions forced Pitt-Greensburg into 21 miscues while committing only five giveaways the entire night. Altoona held a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers and dominated the paint by a 36-16 count. Greensburg got 15 points from Steve Pershing and 13 more from Rashad Davison. The Bobcats outscored the Lions 17-12 from the charity stripe and had one more made 3-pointer. Penn State Altoona trailed 30-24 at intermission after UPG closed the final 5:43 of the period on a 10-4 run. The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the start of the period, which saw a total of six ties and neither team lead by more than six. The second half was a different story as Altoona used a decisive 16-2 run that started with 16:40 on the clock and ended when Herschell Warren (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) made a lay up to put the hosts ahead 46-39 at the 8:27 mark. Greensburg got to within four on two occasions, but Colin and brother Curtis Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) hit back-to-back 3-pointers that ignited a 10-0 run and put the game out of reach. The Lions led by 16 points five times including twice in the last 49 seconds. Curtis Geiger added seven points and made his first start of the year; he and his brother were honored prior to tip-off as part of senior night. Penn State Altoona improved to 13-11 overall and 10-7 in the AMCC. The Lions conclude the regular season this Saturday, February 21, at 3:00 PM at Mount Aloysius. MORE INFORMATION...
